Once known as Washington Market, the moniker Tribeca was coined in the late 70’s. Having once been home to an array markets (mostly vegetable, but some shoes and fireworks too), Tribeca spent a bunch of years trying to figure out what it wanted to be. Though vast in numbers, but mostly not in ceiling height or light, Tribeca’s lofts (like Soho’s) played host to a ton of artists and creative office spaces for most of the 90’s and into the 00’s. I spent a decade in the movie business and I can’t tell you how many movies I helped make out of temporary office spaces in buildings the owners didn’t know what else to do with. I miss those mornings saying, “Hello”, to little old Mrs. Hughes who was the owner of 443 Greenwich Street where I must have worked on a dozen or so productions from. It was all about breakfast or lunch at Bubby’s, an after work drink at Puffy’s or a fancy dinner at The Odeon back then, but only the bravest actually lived in Tribeca. Today, Tribeca is home to some of the greatest lofts, most celebrity filled buildings, most storied architecture and best restaurant in the city. If you’re in the neighborhood, walk over to Staple Street and look up. What you’ll see is oh so Tribeca!
